This is an enquiry service. We do not carry out or certify fire risk assessments, and this is not an emergency line. This form is how to ask about a fire risk assessment. The number at the top of the page is for fires and other emergencies only.

The process

How it works

Three steps from your desk to a conversation with an assessor. Asking is free and there is no obligation.

  1. Describe your premises

Say what the building is used for, where it is and who uses it. Add any earlier assessment you have.

  2. We pass it on

With your consent, we pass your enquiry to a local fire risk assessor if one covers your postcode, and to nobody else.

  3. Agree the details directly

Where an assessor covers your area, they contact you to settle the scope and terms. You decide whether to go ahead.

Escape routes, fire doors, signs and emergency lighting are among the things a fire risk assessment looks at.

Site information

Useful to have to hand

None of this is needed to send an enquiry, but it helps the assessor understand your premises sooner.

  • What the premises are used for

An office, shop, workshop, block of flats or HMO, for example, and the hours it is in use.

  • Size and layout

Roughly how many floors and rooms, and whether you share the building with anyone else.

  • Who uses the building

Staff, residents and visitors, and anyone who might need help to get out, such as people with limited mobility.

  • Your last assessment

If there is an earlier fire risk assessment, its date and any actions it listed. Alarm and emergency lighting test records help too.

Questions

Who is the responsible person?

Under the Regulatory Reform (Fire Safety) Order 2005, it is usually the employer in a workplace, or whoever controls the premises otherwise, such as an owner, landlord or managing agent. More than one person can share the duty.

Do I need my fire risk assessment in writing?

Yes. Since 1 October 2023 every responsible person must record the whole fire risk assessment in writing, together with their fire safety arrangements, whatever the size of the business.

Does this cover flats and houses in multiple occupation?

Yes, for the shared areas. The Order covers the common parts of blocks of flats and shared houses, not the inside of a private home. Our flats and HMOs page explains more.

What if nobody covers my postcode?

We tell you, and we do not pass your details on to anyone. You are free to look elsewhere.

Are you a fire safety company?

No. Fire Risk Checks Herts is an independent enquiry service. We do not carry out assessments ourselves. With your consent, we pass your enquiry to a local fire risk assessor if one covers your postcode.

Are you part of Hertfordshire Fire and Rescue Service?

No. Fire Risk Checks Herts is an independent enquiry service for businesses, landlords and managing agents, and is not connected with the fire service. If you are a householder looking for a home fire safety check, contact Hertfordshire Fire and Rescue Service directly. It offers an online self-check and free home visits for residents at greater risk of fire.
